Business Tip Tuesday: Food Gal's Tips for Successful Partnerships and Collaboration

Hi Friends! I’m Alex and run a food blog called, Food Gal Al. I am honored that my friend Christina from Sweet Streams Lavender Co. has asked me to share some advice on partnerships and collaboration with you all this week.

Before I get started, here’s a little background on me: I started my blog, Food Gal Al, on Instagram in October 2016 as a way to share my favorite recipes and restaurants with friends. Since then it has evolved into one of my greatest passions and hobbies – and has lead me to amazing friendships, partnerships, and quite honestly a better relationship with myself.  It’s funny when you follow your passions – because it begins to take on a life of its own. As any blogger may know, the actual blog is only the tip of the iceberg. Running a blog is a true lesson in business.

But I’m not here to talk digital tips or my personal business strategy. I’d like to talk about tips for successful partnerships and collaboration. For me personally, I find the greatest joy in helping other small businesses and start-ups spread their wings, find their voice, and blossom into successful and thriving companies. I believe in small business owners that take their passion and ideas and create it into something tangible from seemingly nothing. I’m a firm believer that when you show up in life, are good to people, and truly want to help - great things happen.

With that being said, here are my Top 4 Tips for Successful Partnerships and Collaborations:

1. Always be Open to Opportunity. One of my favorite quotes is, “Always believe something wonderful is about to happen.” I don’t know where this saying originated, but it is so true. Whether you own a business or not, going into every life situation with that mindset will serve you well. For instance, I met Christina at a happy hour event last July. I had a terrible cold and really didn’t feel like going, but ended up going anyway because I thought I would meet some great new friends! I sat right by Christina and we talked about work, but we also mentioned how we had passion projects on the side. She just so happened to be a lavender farmer and I was a food blogger searching high and low for some local culinary lavender. It felt so eerily serendipitous I knew that we were bound to work together somehow. Almost 1 year later we are collaborative partners and I’ve loved helping Christina grow her business ever since! Which leads me to my next tip…

2. Follow your Intuition (or gut, or instincts!). As the old adage goes, “when you know, you know”, you just know when something feels right. When you feel this way – don’t think too hard about the logistics. Make the partnership, help each other, collaborate and figure out the rest along the way. The same goes for starting any endeavor. Don’t think about it too hard. Just start – you can figure the rest out along the way. I think people get caught up in trying to make things perfect and then nothing ever happens because there is no such thing as perfect.

3. Know what you don’t know. One of the most valuable attributes in business and in life is to know what you know, and know what you don’t know. It’s important to seek help and ask questions when you may not know how to do something. The best partnerships are when there is a little give-and-take from each party and there is something to be learned on both sides.  Use every partnership and collaboration as a chance for you to not only teach something new, but to learn a new skill or perspective from someone else, too!

4. Partner with your Passion. When you partner or collaborate with someone– make sure it is aligned with your natural passion and interest. I think the best collaborations are done when they are seamlessly aligned with what you already love to do. For instance, I love food, local products, and helping others so my partnership with Sweet Streams Lavender made perfect sense. We have been able to do recipe collaborations, blog collaborations, and so many more fun things that doesn’t even feel like work at all! Why? Because it is our passion!

I hope these fast and easy tips help you in life and with whatever your business endeavors may be! You can find me on Instagram, Facebook, on my website, or drop me a line at
